Quilts and Lap Robes for Our Military
Specifications for twin-sized quilt and lap robe:
Twin-sized quilt
Make sure it is washable. The top should be 55”-72” in width and 65”-90” in length. The most popular size is 63” x 87”. Backing should be 3”-4” larger on all four sides. Quilts should be made from 100% good quality cotton. The most popular colors for the top are red, white and blue. Patriotic themes are loved. However, not all recipients want what’s popular. Please don’t use beige or white fabrics on the back. Many of our injured soldiers have open wounds which can cause stains.
Lap robe
Make sure it is washable. It is usually 30”in width and 34”-36” long--just enough to cover the lap without dragging on the floor or getting caught in the wheels.
Quilt—To make the robe quickly and easily, cut two 17” x 24” coordinating pieces. Line them up right sides facing and machine stitch a ¼” seam down the length. Unfold and press the seam flat. Just like that, you have a quilt top measuring 24” x 33-1/2”. Consider using fleece for a nice soft backing. Sandwich quilt batting in between unless the top is made of a heavy fabric. Then the batting is not needed. The two layers alone will make a nice soft lap robe with excellent insulating qualities.
